Nine of the 18 states with slave populations before the Civil War have issued official apologies. But the largest slaveholding states have yet to apologize. States that have officially apologized for slavery include Delaware, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Alabama, New Jersey, Florida, Tennessee and Connecticut.
