Twitter isn’t quite as popular in Senegal as in other African countries, but it’s starting to take off. The most-followed Twitter account in Senegal has less than 54,000 followers, according to Socialbakers.com, a website that tracks Twitter statistics across the globe. By comparison, the most popular handle in South Africa (belonging to cricketer Kevin Pietersen) — he’s followed by more than 1.8 million people. In Nigeria, rapper Wizkid has nearly 1.2 million followers. Here are Socialbakers‘ 10 most popular Twitter profiles in Senegal.
The Senegalese branch of mobile, Internet and TV giant Orange comes in at No. 10 — the only brand to make the list in Senegal — with 4,028 fans. Original tweets are in French, but retweets like this show up in English:

The Senegalese newspaper comes in at No. 9 on our list with 5,981 followers. Tweets are in French and English:

Despite not posting an original tweet since October, 2013 — it does send out regular retweets – the election monitoring website established in 2011 by Senagaelse activist and blogger Cheikh Fall has 6,252 followers.
Senegal’s most celebrated rapper, Canabasse, is No. 7 on our list with 6,350 followers. He uses a lot of slang in his mixed-language tweets and also retweets a lot:

The Twitter handle for a Senegalese news blog sends out mostly retweets to its 9,556 followers. Tweets are always in French, so we don’t list here, but translated they are the day’s top headlines.
The Senegalese soccer player comes in at No. 4 with 18,400 plus followers. He tweets in French on a variety of topics. Recently he wished Muslims a good month of ramadan.
Gorgui Dieng is one of the few verified accounts in our Top 10 list. The Senegalese professional basketball player for the Minnesota Timberwolves has some 27,600 followers and tweets in English. Recently he’s been posting about the World Cup:

Senegal’s President Macky Sall comes in at No. 3 with some 32,600 followers. He tweets in French only, and mostly about government affairs.
No. 2 on the list is the Senegalese news and commentary website Seneweb, which covers national and international stories and also posts video and audio. It is followed by around 38,600 handles and it tweets multiple times per day, but only in French.
The most popular handle in Senegal belongs to Cathy Guetta, a socialite and judge on “Rising Star” (which is sort of the French version of “The Voice”). Born in Senegal, Guetta now lives in London and Ibiza. She has around 54,000 followers and only follows 70 people back. She tweets in English and French:
