In early July, Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan said he prayed and asked God to punish Florida by making it the epicenter of covid-19 — and now Florida is just that.

Farrakhan, who has been accused by various social media platforms of spreading misinformation about coronavirus, said coronavirus is a punishment from God for people’s willful sins and iniquities.

“Florida, are you becoming the epicenter of the coronavirus? I asked God to do that,” Farrakhan said during his July 4 worldwide address entitled “The Criterion.”

Florida reported 21,683 new covid cases on July 30, breaking a daily record for the entire pandemic, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

New infections in Florida have soared over the last month, from a low near 1,000 new daily cases in June.

Florida now accounts for about one in five new virus infections in the U.S., making it the country’s new epicenter for the outbreak, Bloomberg reported.

The positive test rate of 18.1 percent in Florida is more than twice the national average of 7.8 percent. Florida also has the highest daily hospital admissions of the entire pandemic, according to CDC data. New admissions increased more than 50 percent from the previous week, the data show.

GOP Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is up for re-election in 2022 and expected to run for president in 2024, has insisted that Floridians are “free to choose” how to fight the pandemic, MSNBC reported. He has mocked any pending government restrictions as based on “the whims of bureaucratic authorities.”

Some Twitter users blamed DeSantis for Florida’s soaring cases and hospitalizations. “@RonDeSantisFL How many students and teachers will be on ventilators this fall because of your irresponsibility and your political ambitions? Let school boards do their jobs! #Florida is Number 1 in #COVID19 cases today” Bob Sack @robertsack tweeted.

“Flori-duh” free emaSwati from the brutal dictator @XXVmile tweeted.

Farrakhan said he asked God to punish Florida because Florida is the reason the U.S. has a strained relationship with Cuba.

“While Florida was white all the way around, now you’re deep red. I asked God for that,” Farrakhan said. “Why did I ask God to drop death of Florida? …Because of you Florida and those that ran out or were run out of Cuba … your hatred for Fidel Castro, Florida has stood in the way of a better relationship of our government with Cuba. I asked God to bring down the virus heavily on Florid,” Farrakhan said.
