Nigerian singer-songwriter Tiwa Savage has won numerous awards including an MTV Africa Music Award and two Headies Awards. Recent rumors of the singer’s divorce spurred a fury of Tweets about a perceived publicity stunt, with several insisting that Savage is “not Beyoncé.” We are here to disagree. The similarities are numerous. Here are 12 reasons why Tiwa Savage is Nigeria’s Beyoncé.
Tiwa first signed an endorsement deal in 2012 with Pepsi and in 2014 she renewed her contract with the mega brand. Beyoncé also signed an endorsement deal with Pepsi in 2012.
Both Tiwa and Beyoncé have been dressed by fashion designer LaQuan Smith of Queens, New York. Tiwa wore a white LaQuan Smith dress to the Nigerian Entertainment Awards in 2014. The designer has made custom pieces for Beyoncé.
Tiwa and Beyoncé both did their part for International Women’s Day, March 8. Tiwa performed at the Artiel Women’s Day Concert in Uganda and Beyoncé signed a “Poverty is Sexist” letter along with other women’s rights activists.
Before Tiwa met her husband Tunji Balogun, she tried recruiting him to become her manager. Balogun wouldn’t return Tiwa’s phonecalls, but by happenstance he met her through a friend in Los Angeles. They fell in love, married, and he became her manager in the end. Beyoncé is also married to someone in the entertainment business –rapper and producer Jay-Z.
Several of Beyoncé’s songs and videos have sparked controversy, like her 2013 song “Bow Down” in which she confidently (some argue arrogantly) sings, “I know when you were little girls you dreamt of being in my world.” Tiwa recently stirred up controversy with the video for her song “Wanted” in which she appears to be completely nude.
They’ve both worked with producer Don Jazzy. Savage did so in her song “Eminado” and Beyoncé did in “Lift Off,” in which she featured for Jay-Z and Kanye West.
Both Tiwa and Beyoncé have sampled music by Jamaican reggae singer Ini Kamoze in their music. Beyoncé did so in “Baby Boy” and Tiwa in “Wanted.” That being said, Kamoze wasn’t thrilled over Beyoncé’s use of his music. The artists had to come to a settlement with Beyoncé’s publishers.
In just January of 2015, news broke that Beyoncé and Jay-Z are expecting their second child, and around that same time, Tiwa announced that she is expecting her first child.
Both Tiwa and Beyoncé tried literally every hairstyle under the sun, including sun-kissed blonde hair and braids.
World Music Award nominations
Both Tiwa and Beyoncé have been nominated for World Music Awards. Tiwa was nominated for best video, best female artist, best live act, best song and best entertainer in 2014. Beyoncé received 13 nominations in 2014.
