Racist incidents in European football have not been restricted to club level. In 2004, the late former Spanish coach Luis Aragones walked up to Jose Antonio Reyes and told the former Arsenal forward to tell ‘that black sh*t you are much better than him’. UEFA fined the Spanish Football Federation 100,000 Swiss Francs, which many deemed a lenient sanction.
