Gabonese footballer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was recently named on the three-man shortlist for the CAF African Player of the Year 2015, along with Andre Ayew and Yaya Touré. He scored two hat-tricks in four days

Aubameyang elevated his incredible attacking form in Germany with two hat-tricks in the space of four days at the end of October 2015. Borussia Dortmund defeated Augsburg 5-1 in Bundesliga action on October 24 thanks to three goals from the talented 26-year-old. Three days earlier Aubameyang registered a hat-trick in European club competition against Qabala in Europa League play, defeating them 3-1 at the Bakcell Arena.

Aubameyang won the 2013 Marc-Vivien Foe Award

The Gabon international was the recipient of the 2013 Marc-Vivien Foe Award, which serves to honour the best African player in the French Ligue 1. Aubameyang topped the voting ahead of Cameroonian Nicolas Nkoulou and Burkina Faso’s Jonathan Pitroipa. At the time the striker played for Saint Etienne.

Aubameyang had a bet with club coach Thomas Tuchel

The striker made a bet with coach Thomas Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of the season concerning his aim to score 20 Bundesliga goals. “I want to score 20 goals in the Bundesliga this season. That’s a target I want to achieve. I have a bet with the coach so I will give it my all in order to achieve this goal because I want to improve.” By the half way point in the German league he was well on his way to winning that bet, having scored 18 goals in 17 games by December 20.

Aubameyang’s father, Pierre Aubameyang, was a Gabonese international football player, playing a defender for the French team Stade Lavallois. Both his older brothers, Catilina and Willy, played for Milan youth teams.

Aubameyang is known for his incredible pace

Aubameyang’s incredible speed on the field allows him to play both striker and winger with exceptional skill. He’s been clocked at 30 meters in 3.7 seconds. He claimed he can run faster than Olympic sprinting champion Usain Bolt, but that hasn’t been proved. He was challenged to a 100-meter race by German sprint champion Julian Reus but has not accepted the challenge.

Aubameyang made his Bundesliga debut after joining the Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund in July 2013. In his first match on Aug. 10, 2013, he scored a hat trick against FC Augsburg, including a goal from his first-ever shot in the league, and became the first Gabonese player to appear in the German professional league.

On Aug. 13, 2014, Aubameyang scored a goal in his match against Bayern Munich, resulting in Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 victory in the German Supercup. After scoring the goal, he pulled out a Spiderman mask from the advertising hoardings and put it on, then attempted to spin webs as part of his celebration.

He scored Gabon’s only Olympic goal

In July 2012, Aubameyang traveled to London to represent Gabon at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. In his team’s opening match against Switzerland, he scored the only goal of the match, which would be Gabon’s first and only Olympic goal in history. Gabon was eliminated in the group stage of the Olympic tournament.

Having now spent two seasons in the Bundesliga, Aubameyang’s proficiency in the German language has improved, allowing him to communicate with his coaches more effectively. Aubameyang missed Gabon’s qualifier against Angola in November 2013 when Borussia Dortmund was notified too late, but he also admitted to fears of Ebola. In an interview with BBC World Service in October 2014, he said, “I have this apprehensiveness, I’m naturally a bit scared. It doesn’t need much. All it needs is for someone to touch you who has the virus and there you go…So there is this apprehension, from the club as well, naturally there’s concern about their players and above all if I come back with this disease I could contaminate the other players.” Eventually, however, the tournament proceeded and he represented Gabon admirably at the 2015 event.
