Maria Bello

The “Thank You For Smoking” star revealed not only that she was an eloquent writer in one 2013 New York Times essay, but also that she was gay. Bello explained in an interview that her decision to come out was prompted by her son asking if she was hiding something from him. Her essay touched on what the word “partner” means to Bello, and her feelings about being in a “modern family.”

Ricky Martin

Martin came out bilingually! In 2010, on his website, Martin wrote in both English and Spanish, “Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment. Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution…I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.” Martin has said in an interview he remained quiet for years about his sexuality because people close to him told him it could ruin his career.

Ellen DeGeneres

Today, DeGeneres is essentially the face of the lesbian community in talk show TV, but we mustn’t forget the climate of the U.S. when she came out — it was 1997! DeGeneres came out via her character Ellen on the popular sitcom “Ellen,” but this was also her admittance to the public that the actor behind the character was also gay. Ellen put a lot of planning into this episode, calling the writers of her show over to her home far in advance and having them plan out a series of episodes that would begin to suggest Ellen might be gay.

Rosie O’Donnell

The former host of “The View” came out doing what she loves — standup! During a performance at a New York club, O’Donnell veered away from her prepared material for a moment and told the audience she was gay. O’Donnell’s loving fans responded as one would hope: they didn’t bat an eyelash. And neither did the media! (Hardly!) O’Donnell released her memoir later that year, which went more into detail about her experiences as a lesbian.

Orlando Cruz

In 2012, Cruz issued a public statement coming out as gay. He said, “I want to be true to myself. I want to try to be the best role model I can be for kids who might look into boxing as a sport and a professional career. I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will be a proud gay man.” Cruz was the first professional boxer to come out as gay. Cruz said in an interview that hiding his sexuality was draining him of energy, and he hoped coming out would make him a better boxer.
