Same-Sex Porn Searches In Countries With Anti-Gay Views

1 of 11

Multiple journals on Google Trends recently showed a correlation between countries with anti-gay views and online searches for same-sex porn by citizens of those countries.

Most of the countries listed here have some of the most anti-gay views in the world, ranging from collective outcries against the lifestyle, to legal rulings banning same-sex relationships, to violent acts against members of the LGBT communities. As multiple subjects were typed into the Google Trends search engine, many of these countries appeared recurrently. However, it’s worth noting that nations considered hostile towards gay citizens including Russia, Iran, and Afghanistan did not appear on any rankings.

Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud had a name for acting out on something that has been anguishing a person. He named the phenomenon reaction formation. It’s a defense mechanism in which emotions that produce anxiety or are perceived as unacceptable are mastered by exaggerating the directly opposing tendency.

Here are 10 same-sex porn searches in countries with anti-gay views, according to Google Trends on May 23, 2014.

This country led the way with searches for “teen anal sex videos,” followed by the U.S. It also landed in the top 10 gay sex pics, shemale sex and anal sex videos. Homosexual sex had been criminalized in India since 1860, but the Delhi High Court overturned the ban in 1999. In 2013, the Supreme Court reinstated Section 377 of India’s Penal Code. It reads: “whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine.” (Huffington Post).

It’s Hell in Nigeria.” A 2007 Pew Global Attributes Project gauged 97 percent of Nigeria as viewing homosexuality as an unacceptable way of living. Sri Lanka

This little island off of the Indian peninsula is high up on many Google search lists for same-sex porn. It’s No. 4 for gay sex pics, No. 2 for shemale sex, and No. 4 for anal sex videos. Yemen

The Arabian Peninsula country of Yemen is No. 1 for typing in “teen anal sex.” To be clear, the exact Google Trends result is not for videos or pics, but simply “teen anal sex.” Also scoring high in this search category are Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Iraq. Gay websites are blocked in Yemen. What kind of research could all its searches imply? Simple awareness of a subject, or limited methods to access desired images? Yemen is not a gay-friendly country. The Sharia legal systems have made homosexuality completely illegal. Punishments range from public flogging to jail time. Extremists, many of whom are thought to be associated with Al-Qaeda, have killed people on the streets accused of homosexuality.

Jamaica

In Jamiaca, gay sex videos rank No. 4 in worldwide searches. It’s not all beaches and Bob Marley in this paradise. The laws do not reflect this. The Jamaican Offenses Against the Persons Act makes anal sex and buggery a crime punishable by at least 10 years in prison. Any “acts of gross indecency” between men is also criminal. While lesbians have allegedly not faced as harsh treatment, Amnesty International warns of vigilante actions being committed against all members of the Jamaican LGBT community.

Uganda

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is not a friend of the gay population. He propagates an ideology of malevolence against the LGBT community, which has suffered verbal and physical assaults, and in some cases grisly murders. Uganda is No. 3 worldwide for one of the top homosexual porn search topics. Museveni signed off on the Anti-Homosexual Act in February that would put “repeated offenders” in prison for life. It also threatens the lives of people working for local non-governmental organizations who are aware of — but do not report — same-sex acts, and of Ugandans living abroad. Apparently, 96 percent of the country does not favor homosexuality. As seen with most of these 10 countries, there may be a huge gap between what people say, and what they do before they hit search.
