Slowly but surely, politicians all over the world are recognising the power of using social media to make their constituents feel more connected to them, and to voice their opinions whenever they want.

Whether on Facebook or Twitter, these political figures are increasingly aware of the need to connect with the people via social media, and this is also the case in South Africa.

Here are 8 of the most active South African politicians on social media.

Maimane is the charismatic leader of the official opposition party in South Africa, the Democratic Alliance. With two masters degrees to his name, the highly educated politician understands the power of social media, using his Twitter account to interact with the people of South Africa and push his political agenda. With over 280,000 followers on the short-message format social media platform, his views are often retweeted and liked, while he follows around 727 other accounts on Twitter.

Zille is the former leader of South Africa’s official opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, and currently works as the Premier of the Western Cape. She has around 886,000 followers on Twitter and claims to have had one of the first verified accounts in her region. On her Twitter page you can follow the opinions of the party at a very up-to-date speed and even catch photos of D.A. conferences.
