Charlize Theron was born in 1975 in Benoni, South Africa and grew up on a farm. She was training to be a ballerina when a knee injury ended that aspiration. Her first acting part was an uncredited role in “Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest” in 1995. She is best known for her performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the movie “Monster.” The role landed her an Academy Award for Best Actress. Her surname is pronounced differently in South Africa than it is in the U.S.A. In South Africa, it is pronounced “Thrown” and “Ther-on” in the U.S.A.

In her early teens she started modeling. She admitted to not really liking it in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
3. Her mother killed her father in 1991 after he threatened Charlize
The legal ruling was that Gerda Theron killed her husband, Charles, in self-defense. Charlize’s mother was not charged with a crime.
4. Her first language is not English
Charlize spoke Afrikaans as her first language. She normally speaks in her native tongue, Afrikaans, to her mother, Gerda.
5. She learned English watching American TV
Charlize learned to speak English by watching American TV shows, especially soap operas.
6. She is also the first South African to win a Best Actress Oscar
Charlize won Best Actress in 2004 for role portraying serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the film “Monster.” She also won the Screen Actors Guild Award and The Golden Globe for the role.
