The family of Malcolm X has filed a $100 million lawsuit against the United States government, the New York Police Department (NYPD), and other federal agencies, alleging their complicity in his assassination and a subsequent decades-long cover-up. Malcolm X was killed on Feb. 21, 1965, during a speech at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem, New York City, in front of his wife and children.
The lawsuit, announced by civil rights attorney Ben Crump at a press conference on Nov. 15 accuses agencies such as the FBI, CIA, and NYPD of deliberately failing to protect Malcolm X despite credible threats to his life, ABC News reports. It also alleges these entities created conditions that facilitated his murder. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has also been named in the suit. According to the complaint, federal agencies knowingly reduced Malcolm X’s security, arrested his bodyguards days before his death, and infiltrated his inner circle with informants.
There was long been a belief that John Ali, an assistant to Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad, played a part in Malcolm X’s death. The relationship between Muhammad and Malcolm X had soured when Malcolm X announced his departure from the NOI on March 8, 1964. Ali, who was the former national secretary of the NOI, was rumored to have also been a U.S. Government operative.
New evidence presented by the family’s legal team includes affidavits and witness testimonies that suggest federal informants were present at the scene and actively conspired in the events leading to Malcolm X’s assassination, according to a press release. Mustafa Hassan, a witness to the murder, reportedly stated that NYPD officers appeared to help one of the alleged shooters escape. Lawyers further claim that nine FBI informants were inside the ballroom during the assassination and that one of the attackers was later granted favors by federal authorities.
At a recent press conference at the the Shabazz Center in NYC, Ilyasah Shabazz, Malcolm X’s daughter, reminded everyone of the lasting trauma and injustice her family endured, noting that her mother, Betty Shabazz, was pregnant when she witnessed the killing. The lawsuit seeks accountability for what the family describes as unlawful, unconstitutional actions that not only led to Malcolm X’s death but also obstructed their pursuit of justice.
The NYPD has declined to comment due to pending litigation, and federal agencies have yet to respond publicly.
