Hands down my favorite of the new school of social media sites, NextDoor.com allows you to connect with your actual neighbors. You have to provide proof of residence to join your neighborhood group and it’s an excellent networking source for everything from finding lost dogs to hiring competent electricians and nannies.
With an estimated 80-million monthly visitors according to eBizMBA stats, the Russian VK is Europe’s second-largest social network after Facebook. Worldwide, Facebook gets 900-million monthly visitors and Twitter, 290 million.
Based out of San Francisco, Tagged is No. 11 on the eBizMBA list of most-popular social networks, generating around 38 million visitors per month. It is a gaming-oriented website that allows users to browse profiles, share tags and virtual gifts and play games with others on the network.
This is another of my favorite social networking sites for meeting real people socially and locally. It allows groups with shared interests to plan meetings and events in their local communities, which is pretty dang cool. The website motto is “Find your people.”
If you need to get something done, join the TaskRabbit network to search for vetted “Taskrabbits” that will help with everything from picking up the drycleaning to grocery shopping. The company has been gaining popularity since launching five years ago, and now operates out of 19 different U.S. cities.
This mobile dating app which is connected to users’ Facebook accounts has been popular since launching, but gained even more traction at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games when athletes started using it. The app allows users to either “like” or “nope” other user profiles. If two users “like” each other they are both notified of the match.
A Lativa-based social networking site where users can pose questions and remain anonymous, Ask.fm was launched in June, 2010. It’s now the 13th most-popular social networking site in the world with 34 million log-ins per month, according to eBizMBA.
Initially named MyYearbook, this social networking site was originally started in 2005 by two high school students a year after Facebook. It was re-branded in 2012 as MeetMe with a mission to connect users to new friends and potential dates. The company launched Charm, a mobile dating app, in October, 2013.
The photo-sharing site owned by Yahoo! gets around 80-million hits per month according to eBizMBA stats, which puts it just 20 million visitors behind the website’s seventh most-popular social media platform, Instagram.
OK, I’m sure you’ve heard of Myspace, but did you know it not only still exists, but is trying for a comeback? It relaunched last summer, dropping the capital “S” from its header, and offering a host of new music-focused capabilities. Best of all for fans of the original social network, Myspace still gets around 40 million visitors per month eBizMBA reports.
