Most Social Sports to Play

3 of 11

Sports are a fantastic way to get active and fit, but they’re also awesome for meeting new people. And while it’s great if you’re super passionate about a sport and want a competitive match-up, there’s also something to be said for playing for fun and shooting the breeze with teammates. Tons of cities have social sports leagues that anybody can join, regardless of fitness level, and they’re jam-packed with cool people looking to have a good time.

Rugby
Rugby players are notorious for liking to have a good time, and you’d be hard pressed to find a team that doesn’t head to the bar after games. After all, in a game where you basically hug each other the whole time (I’ve also been told this is a scrum, not hugging), how would you not make good friends?

Volleyball
Two words: beach volleyball. It’s literally designed to give you the perfect opening to kick it on the sand before, after, and during games, and take quick dips in the ocean to cool off after working up a sweat. Can’t go wrong.

Tennis
Those who frequent tennis clubs know that the hanging out around the courts is just as, if not more, important as the game itself. Grabbing lunch with friends in between bouts is in the description.

Bowling
Ten percent activity, 90 percent cheering, drinking, eating and chatting? Sounds like a pretty good deal. Bowling lanes are really just giant playgrounds for adults, with a little bit more order. Plus, you don’t necessarily have to be in the best shape to be competitive.

Dodgeball
Bring it on back to primary school and get your dodgeball on, where you get to hurl balls atother people for no reason. It’s fun, it’ll get your heart rate up, and you’ll be able to make Ben Stiller references from “Dodgeball” every day. “Nobody makes me bleed my own blood – nobody!”

Soccer
The world’s favorite sport, soccer has the bonus of having a ton of people on each team, so you’ve got a party going already. It needs incredibly little equipment, and the rules are probably the most straightforward you’re going to find (kick the ball into the goal, and try not to let the other team do the same. Boom, you’re a star).

Golf
It’s basically just an extended walk around a pretty green area with the occasional swing. If you’ve got the means – golf isn’t necessarily the cheapest sport to play – it’s a great way to hang out outside and release some pent up aggression against tiny white balls among friends.

Flag football
Like rugby, but without the tackling, so you have a better shot of not breaking your collarbone. But you definitely will get equal opportunities for post-game brews, and you’ll master the swish-the-hips run to keep people from snagging your flag.

Softball
Softball is another one of those games that anybody can participate in, and since it can really only be played in nice weather, you’ve got an excuse to stand in the outfield and bask in the sun – er, I mean, pay attention to the game and field some balls. Plus, nothing beats the satisfaction of sliding into home and scoring the winning run.

Basketball
One-on-one, three-on-three, or the full fives, basketball is another ideal social sport, and can really be played anywhere with a hoop, giving it the added benefit of being a weatherproof choice. You’ll get an awesome cardio workout, the chance to show off your vertical leap, and the opportunity to listen to the “Space Jam” soundtrack on repeat.
