Q&A: Evans Akanno Founder on Nigeria’s Creative Industry, Design Agency Journey

AFKInsider: How do you reach target consumers since traditional avenues such as television and internet are not as developed as they are in other regions of the world?

Internet statistics for Nigeria is rated at over 50 million nigerians online, so there is a very big avenue for Nigerian businesses to enjoy followership/patronage via their online platforms. Since the launch of the agency, we have focused on powering our online platforms; company website, company Facebook page, etc. and ensuring they meet up with international standards while setting local standards. A lot of times we receive emails, phone calls, and social media messages from people who have come across our platform and also via referrals from our clients who have enjoyed the quality and speed of our service delivery.

AFKInsider: In your own view, what makes a successful campaign?

There are three things that make a successful campaign — Goal. Execution. Success.
One of the most successful campaigns I had recently at Konga was called the “Fall Yakata Christmas Campaign”

We brought Black Friday and Cyber Monday Super Sales to Nigeria and called it “Fall Yakata” Christmas Sale. We had days of mind-blowing slashes on prices.

Goal: We decided to bring a shopping trend that was completely alien to the Nigerian e-commerce space.

Execution: We strategized and thought about the best kind of creatives, radio jingles, social media content/ads, etc. that would be used to execute this. Tasks were shared across the team and we immediately set out to execute.

Success: The entire campaign was very successful with raving reviews from customers, press and investors. We recorded transactions in three days that were higher than the total amount in December the previous year.

AFKInsider: What consumer messaging trends are most popular in Nigeria?

These are mainly divided into trends online and offline. For offline, the conventional TVs and Radio are the best media. Social media is a very important leader in the online sphere, while email marketing is just really beginning to kick in.

AFKInsider: What kind of support do you offer small businesses?

There are huge opportunities for small business owners who know what they are doing to take advantage of the amazing resources available online to drive maximum reach and ROI for their businesses, and this is where the Evans Akanno Creative Agency comes in.
We have a suite of offers available for small businesses ranging from web design services to brand identity and online marketing.

A lot of businesses take these things for granted. Last year we ran a competition where we gave businesses opportunities to get a whole suite of services from website to online marketing, etc. You will be surprised how many companies have been registered for years without getting some of the basics done.

AFKInsider: What is your plan for 2014?

We want to be part of more success stories. This past year we had so many success stories and we want to continue building on this. We will be exploring new design and online marketing techniques while acquiring new partners.
