Hip-hop sensation Nicki Minaj is stirring up controversy on social media with an anti-vax post.
The Trinidad-born superstar revealed that she didn’t attend the Met Gala Monday in New York City because the coveted event required attendees to be vaccinated. Minaj tweeted that a friend of her cousin suffered from swollen testicles and impotency after taking the vaccine. The annual fundraising Met Gala benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in NYC.
“They want you to get vaccinated for the Met. If I get vaccinated it won’t for the Met,” Minaj tweeted. “It’ll be once I feel I’ve done enough research. I’m working on that now.”
In a Twitter thread that followed, Minaj wrote that a friend of her cousin in Trinidad allegedly became impotent after getting the shot.
“My cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen,” she wrote. “His friend was weeks away from getting married, now the girl called off the wedding. So just pray on it & make sure you’re comfortable with ur decision, not bullied.”
Many people responded on Twitter to Minaj’s tale about her cousin’s friend’s swollen testicles with a counter-argument that it may have had more to do with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) than a side effect of the covid-19 vaccine, Complex reported.
The backlash against Minaj’s anti-vax stance was heavy.
“Can you please delete this she doesn’t know what she’s saying please she just escaped the asylum delete this please I’m begging you” reformed janaab @mangonama pleaded with Twitter.
Chairman Asiago @fkaLuna_ suggested Minaj’s cousin’s friend had an STD. “My sister, that man got the clap and lied”.
Dennis de Groot @punchdouble tweeted, “Your ‘cousin’s friend’ has untreated gonorrhea.”
Swollen testicles could be from orchitis, an inflammation of one or both testicles, usually caused by an infection, according to WebMD. Orchitis can cause pain and swelling in one testicle for one to several days and if untreated, can spread to the whole testicle.
Bacteria that cause STDs such as gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis can cause orchitis in sexually active men, usually age 19 to 35. You may be at risk if you have multiple sexual partners, unprotected sex, if your partner has had an STD, or if you have a history of STDs, according to WebMD.
