The average beer drinker consumes two kegs worth of the fizzy beverage each year. Of course, you have your select beer enthusiasts i.e. college students who top that in a week. Surely craft beers have their own merits, but when it comes to quantity, these good old faithful brands are the top sellers around the world. You may be surprised to see that several of these beers sell way better outside their countries of origin.

Budweiser

Budweiser original is the official No. 1 beer, but for those watching their figures, Budweiser light actually sells more than the official No. two on this list. First brewed in 1876, this American staple is now on the market in 80 countries. Five years ago, Anheuser-Busch sold a good chunk of its stock to InBev, forming the largest brewing company in the world.

The Australian beer ranks among the lowest in its down-under homeland, but anywhere else in the world you’ll find its sales soaring. Ironically, the top beer of choice for Australians is Victoria Bitter, which is in fact owned by the same company that owns Fosters.

Corona

The beer that exudes fun in the sun is sold in more than 150 countries, with the U.S. and Mexico being its top two customers. Fun fact: ask any Mexican local who started the Corona-and-lime rule and they’ll say the U.S. Ask anyone in the U.S., and they’ll say Mexico. Company headquarters are in Mexico.

Skol

A favorite in South American and African countries, the maker of Skol recently received some heat for putting out beer-flavored ice cream. The public worries the treat will endorse under-age drinking, although there is no actual alcohol in the product.

Guinness

Guinness sales go through the roof on St. Patty’s day in the U.S., but those types of numbers are normal in Ireland on a daily basis. It’s hard to walk a block on an Irish shopping street without seeing the beer, or its paraphernalia, for sale. The company brings in 2 million Euros a year from Ireland sales alone.

Stella Artois

Its homeland of Belgium only holds 8 percent of this beer’s market share and it is one of the least popular brews among locals. But the rest of the world embraces it: it’s the third best-selling beer in the U.K., and is often a major sponsor of the Cannes and Sundance film festivals.

This beer oozes the free and exotic spirit of Brazil. And if that’s not enough, its commercials featuring Jennifer Lopez and Megan Fox easily boost sales.
