There are a number of transport and logistics tech startups that have emerged in Africa, simplifying processes in industries that were previously not catered for online and via mobile.

From online ticket sales to companies dedicated to delivering parcels quickly and cost-effectively with updates sent via a mobile app, tech startups are ensuring that they earn a piece of the transport and logistics pie in Africa.

Startups in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Zimbabwe have all launched with this industry in mind.

Here are 10 transport and logistics tech startups that are moving the continent forward.

Shuttlers

Nigerians Damilola Olokesusi and Busola Majekodunmi are the founders of Shuttlers, a startup that enables professionals to access comfortable and efficient transport to and from work, using technology and a multi-staff bus system to get users to and from their places of business.

WhereIsMyTransport

An open digital transport mobility platform founded by students of the University of Cape Town in South Africa, WhereIsMyTransport has been recognized for innovation used within the platform, which provides invaluable data about transport mobility, and currently supports 20 cities in 10 countries in Africa and the Middle East.

Zimbabwe – myRunner

The winner of the Seedstars Harare competition in Zimbabwe, myRunner is an online bus ticket booking platform and app that gives users useful functionality. The startup offers bus reviews, bookings and even live tracking of where each bus is in the system. myRunner will travel to Switzerland next year as Zimbabwe’s representatives at the Seedstars World competition.

Sendy

Sendy is a startup from Kenya which aims to connect small businesses with local drivers, ensuring that delivery and logistics in general is simplified and made more transparent in Africa. By enabling more affordable and efficient package delivery, the startup is aware that people, businesses and communities are positively affected.

Parcel-it

Nigerian E-delivery startup Parcel-it aims to make a positive impact in the logistics market, with a dispatch booking and scheduling mobile app designed to enable fast, reliable and affordable delivery of parcels.

Kamtar

Kamtar is a an Ivorian startup that enables users to book commercial vehicles such as trucks and vans via mobile or online. The company itself does not own any vehicles, but works with logistics and truck owners to fulfil bookings, providing value added services such as vehicle tracking and insurance.

mTick

Removing the hassle from queuing for a bus ticket, mTick has developed an online booking platform that provides users with the ability to book inter-city bus tickets in Cote D’Ivoire. Schedules are available online, and prices can be compared before a mobile payment method is used and the ticket received via email or text message.

MyExpressTicket

MyExpressTicket has developed an intra-urban real-time bus booking platform, allowing users in Cameroon to get their bus tickets online in the most convenient way, enabling more efficient public transport transactions.

Rwanda – PikiWash

PikiWash was the Rwandan startup selected to take part in this year’s Seedstars World Competition. The startup is focused on providing motorcycle cleaning services that are eco-friendly and time-saving, benefiting those using that mode of transport in the East African country.

CarZar.co.za

The online car marketplace based in Cape Town received a boost in May last year when Sweden-listed investment firm Vostok New Ventures made a $1.5 million investment in CarZar.co.za, allowing the company to continue building its brand in the Mother City and beyond.
