The African Nations Championship (2016 CHAN) is currently taking place in Rwanda, with the continent’s best teams made up of Africa-based players challenging each other for the coveted title of continental champion.

Some players in the 16 participating teams are fairly unknown to a global audience, but some of these talented individuals will no doubt become household names in time.

With this in mind, we take a look at 8 of the players currently in action at the 2016 CHAN that are worth keeping an eye on.

Chisom Chikatara – Nigeria

The powerful attacker is quickly making a name for himself at the 2016 CHAN, scoring a stunning hat-trick in Nigeria’s first game against Niger to secure a 4-1 victory for Sunday Oliseh’s men. He scored again for his team in their 1-1 draw with Tunisia, proving his worth as a reliable striker.

Uganda captain Farouk Miya impressed with a performance that only lasted a single half, as he set-up a goal for team-mate Joseph Ochaya before scoring one of his own in his side’s 2-2 draw against Mali in their opening encounter. The player would go off injured at half time unfortunately, and his influence was missed after that.

Ahmed Akaichi – Tunisia

The 26-year-old Etoile du Sahel striker was on target with a brace in his national team’s opening CHAN match against Guinea, which ended in a 2-2 stalemate. His scoring form continued in the second game of the tournament, as his strike helped the North Africans to earn a 1-1 draw with Nigeria. He previously played his club football for Tunisian giants Esperance de Tunis.

Alseny Camara – Guinea

The talented Guinea player was twice on target in his team’s 2-2 draw with Tunisia in their first match of the competition, allowing his team to take a point from a difficult encounter thanks to his valuable brace. He is a player with great potential, who will no doubt attract a few admirers during the tournament.

Yazid Emane Atouba – Cameroon

A ten-man Cameroon side managed to snatch a 1-0 victory over their Angolan opponents in their first match of the 2016 CHAN, thanks to a well-placed first half free kick from Yazid Emane Atouba. The talented 23-year-old Coton Sport midfielder displayed good technical ability in dispatching the free kick.

Ernest Sugira – Rwanda

The hosts have been benefiting from the talents of striker Ernest Sugira, who scored two goals in their second match of the campaign, helping his team to a 2-1 victory over Gabon. The AS Kigali player began his career as a midfielder, but has flourished into a solid attacker.

Elia Meshack – Congo DR

The Congolese have been in fine form, winning 3-0 against Ethiopia and 4-2 against Angola to progress from Group B of the 2016 CHAN. Meshack Elia was on target in both matches, scoring a goal in each of the encounters, displaying excellent consistency and an eye for goal.

Jacob Banda - Zambia

Jacob Banda – Zambia

Banda is the keeper for the Zambian national team, as well as for ZESCO United in the Zambian league. The number one has been in excellent form at this year’s CHAN, keeping a clean sheet in the two opening matches of the competition against Zimbabwe and Uganda.
