The Top 25 African Retailers And What They Earn

1 of 27

Financial advisory consultant Deloitte on Tuesday released its inaugural African Powers of Retailing 2015 report Tuesday, listing the top 25 African retailers and what they earn.

South African retailers took the top 10 positions.

Southern African markets are more mature and more saturated than West and East African markets, and South African companies are looking at opportunities there.

Of the top 25 African retailers, with a combined presence in 21 countries, 10 come from countries outside South Africa, with three Zimbabwean retailers, two from Botswana and one each from Kenya, Morocco, Tunisia, Nigeria and Zambia.

Choppies is the fastest growing African retailer recording 24.4 percent year-on-year revenue growth from fiscal year 2012 to 2013.

The food and beverage sector accounted for 52.5 percent of the top 25 collective revenue and nine of the top 25 retailers. It is also the most lucrative sector with the highest average retail revenues.

Most of the top 25 African retailers – 17 of them — are in Southern Africa and they control 93.7 percent of total retail sales.

Egypt has the highest e-commerce sales at US$2.54 billion, accounting for 2.16 percent of total retail sales in fiscal year 2013. However, Nigeria growing fastest in e-commerce with 63.2 percent of compound annual growth rate revenue for fiscal years 2011-2013.

South Africa’s retailers compete in very tough operating environments, said Dylan Piatti, Africa Consumer Business chief at Deloitte.

While South African retailers have expanded aggressively in sub-Saharan Africa, the shortage of retail locations and high transportation costs have led them to target expansion outside Africa.

Because the Southern African markets are more mature and more saturated than West and East Africa, South African companies are looking at opportunities there, according to Claire Hoy, Deloitte, a Western Cape regional leader.

Companies are looking to expand in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana, Hoy said.
