On Thursday, Apple released a statement explaining why they choose to slow down older models. The Lithium-ion batteries in iPhones depletes over time and can cause the phones to suddenly die. New updates slow the older models down in order to preserve this battery life. According to the statement, Apple noted this was not a strategy to encourage consumers to buy newer models. “Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices.” Apple
