The first-ever major live awards event voted by podcast listeners will be held in January to honor the best in podcasting and celebrate the talent and variety of leaders in the booming industry.

The live iHeartRadio Podcast Awards are scheduled for Jan. 18, 2019, iHeartMedia announced today in a press release.

Podcasts now have twice the reach of all of satellite radio, and the iHeartRadio Podcast Network says it has seen a nearly 200 percent year-over-year growth in podcast listening in the past year.

The 90-minute award ceremony will have a live audience with host Charlamagne Tha God, nationally-syndicated on-air host and co-host of “The Brilliant Idiots” and “The Breakfast Club”. Live streaming will be hosted by Mario Lopez, on-air and TV personality.

Podcasts came on the scene more than 10 years ago, and the industry steadily grew in listenership and popularity. More than 44 percent of Americans have listened to a podcast.

“Podcasting has roared onto the audio scene, creating the most excitement since the advent of streaming music services,” said Conal Byrne, President of iHeartMedia’s Podcasting Division, in a prepared statement. “The iHeartRadio Podcast Awards will provide a forum to celebrate the high-caliber, creative content that has made podcasting a major new audio category — and that truly reflects America’s favorite podcasts, voted by the listeners themselves”
