South Africa’s Sports Minister Challenges Team Racial Quotas

“You can’t have transformations without targets,” Fikile Mbalula, South Africa’s sports minister told CCTV Africa, His latest endeavor, according to a CCTV Africa video report, to raise the racial quotas of black players in sports is gaining lots of attention.

Addressing all of the nation’s sports federation’s he threatened to enforce boycotts and sanctions if teams did not have at least 60 percent of black players on their teams. The rule has recently been relaxed, especially after seeing little to no change within the sports of rugby and cricket.

“When we say 40/60, it’s to measure our capacity of each federation whether or not these things can actually be achieved. It’s to raise the standard to the point where it is with a view of assuring that you’re able to ensure that everybody sits up and takes notice.”
