Barca And Bayern Earn Slender Champions League First Leg Leads

Barcelona and Bayern Munich moved one step closer to a UEFA Champions League semi-final after wins in their quarter-final matches against Atletico Madrid and Benfica respectively.

Barca emerged from Tuesday night with the Spanish bragging rights after coming back from a goal down to turn things around and earn a hard-fought 2-1 victory over their La Liga rivals.

A typically excellent Fernando Torres finish in the 24th minute meant that the visitors broke the deadlock in the first half, but the Spanish striker was sent off for a second bookable offence ten minutes later, leaving Atleti in a precarious position at the Nou Camp.

Consistent pressure from the home side would eventually pay off, with La Liga’s best defence rattled in the second half thanks to a brace from Luis Suarez.

After an hour the Uruguayan was alert enough in the box to equalise, with the goal giving the Blaugrana the edge that they were after, while another goal from the striker a few minutes later gave the home side a victory to carry through to the second leg in Madrid next week.

In the other Champions League match of the night, a very early strike from Arturo Vidal would spell success for Bayern Munich, though the goal in the second minute would remain the only goal of the game.

The 1-0 win in Germany will see the Germans travel to Portugal in the return leg next week in an effort to finish off the tie and progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
