South African App Wants To Simplify Visa Laws On Traveling With Kids

Understanding legal jargon can be frustrating especially for parents travelling and with less time to go through legal articles and bills.

A new web app has been launched to help South Africans and non-South Africans alike know exactly what they need when travelling to and from the country with their children. The child visa checklist app,a product of Cape Town-based travel company Drive South Africa aims to allow users to view and print a checklist of documents specific to their child-travel scenario.

The app launched just weeks after South Africa introduced new visa requirements that aim to reduce and prevent child trafficking across South African borders.

The laws affect anyone travelling to or from South Africa with a child under the age of 18 years. This includes South African citizens leaving or arriving into the country, and foreign nationals arriving and leaving the country. Though the laws are themselves good, a section of associations think the move is too strict and complex.

Southern African Tourism Services Association (SATSA) believes the new regulations would have a negative impact on tourist arrivals into South Africa by as much as 28 per cent but the new app aims to help parents confidence when travelling in and out of South Africa with children under 18 years old, and remove all uncertainty faced by parents trying to work out exactly which documents they need when travelling with their youngsters.

Andre Van Kets, co-founder and marketing director of Drive South Africa said in a statement,“This confusion, and the harm it might cause South African tourism, prompted the development of this simple to use web app, which cuts through the legal jargon and helps South Africans and non-South Africans alike know exactly what they need when travelling to and from the country with their children.”
