Bold Kenyan Entrepreneur Finds Passion In Selling Adult Toys

Talking about sex in many African societies is considered a taboo and selling adult toys is doing the unthinkable for many people in a country like Kenya, but  not for London-Schooled Lawyer, Beverly Munga.

Munga sells what other people only talked about in hushed voices. She literally hawks sex toys door-to-door, as most of her clients make orders online and she has to find a way to deliver to them across Kenya’s capital Nairobi.

“Sex is a big taboo in Kenya and people are not willing to talk about sex openly. Guys are not willing to talk about it,” Munga told Capital FM’s Respect the Hustle.

“When I started I thought ‘oh-my-god is it going to sell  or am I just doing this for fun to pass time?’ But I told myself I just want to do something that is unique. I don’t want to do something that everyone does. I don’t want to sell shoes or handbags or clothes.”

She said the demand for her product is very high and most of her clients are single ladies and a few married women, who only indulge her in secrecy.

Munga said she uses social media apps such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to reach her target market. This she says has helped her clients reach her anonymously or in private chats and avoid the preying eyes.

“Me and my boldness, I would go to tweeter and [tweet-off] until my friends tell me they have to mute me when they are in the office,” she said.
