Anderson Defeats Ilhan To Reach Wimbledon Third Round

South African tennis player Kevin Anderson reached the third round at Wimbledon on Wednesday after defeating Turkey’s Marsel Ilhan in second round action.

The 28-year-old Turkish number one fell to the 14th seeded South African, but it was not an easy passage for Anderson, as he eventually triumphed 6-7, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4, but not before fighting off an excellent challenge from his opponent.

Ilhan won the first set 7-6 through a tie break, before Anderson reversed that result in the second. Having come back from a set down to tie things up, the South African then had the momentum to go on and win the next two sets, both with a 6-4 scoreline as the Turk did not give up on a potential fightback until the final game.

Ilhan beat Polish 24-year-old Jerzy Janowicz in the first round, but in Anderson he came up against a powerful server and a more experienced professional on the ATP circuit, and that experience counted when it mattered most, allowing him to turn a poor start into a victory through perseverance and belief.

Anderson earned his 200th match win with when he beat Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the first round, and his second match went smoothly, as he cruises on to the third round.

The 29-year-old is playing in his seventh Wimbledon tournament, with his best ever run coming in 2014 when he reached the fourth round.
