Murray Defeats Anderson In Aegon Championship Final

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson fell at the last hurdle as Scot Andy Murray defeated him in the final of the Aegon Championship at Queen’s Club in London on Sunday.

Murray won the match 6-3, 6-4, displaying excellent form with Wimbledon only a week away. Anderson has been in great shape too, and was hoping to win the 13th title of his career, following his success in Marseille this past February.

The 2-metre tall South African defeated Stanislas Wawrinka with two tie-breaks, 7-6(4) 7-6(11) on Wednesday, allowing him to move on to the quarter-finals of the competition, where he beat Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets 7-6, 7-5.

The victory saw him progress to the semi-finals in London, where he was able to overcome Gilles Simon of France 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 on Saturday. That result set him up for a title showdown with Murray, but the Scottish star was in scintillating form, and did not allow Anderson to produce a winning performance.

Incredibly, Murray beat Viktor Troicki in the morning and Anderson in the afternoon, with only around two hours separating the two matches, as the semi-final was held over from Saturday evening.

The 2013 Wimbledon champions finished the title encounter in just over an hour, serving for the match and bringing the British crowd to their feet for a loud and rousing applause in congratulations for Murray’s fourth Queen’s title and a great display over Anderson, who for his part enjoyed an excellent competition.

The 29-year-old South African talent is ranked 17th in the world, and produced a fantastic statistic of 106 aces during the tournament, demonstrating his weapon of choice on the tennis court.

Having warmed up well by reaching the Aegon final ahead of Wimbledon in a week, Anderson will be looking to make a big splash at the most important competition on the tennis calendar.
