Oscar Pistorius Could Be Released From Prison In August

South African former Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius is set to be released from prison after serving only 10 months since his conviction in October 2014.

This follows a recommendation from the South African department of correctional services.

The double amputee athlete was convicted of the culpable homicide after the murder of 29-year-old model Reeva Steenkamp on February 14, 2013. Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison after shooting Steenkamp through a toilet door at his Pretoria home, but based on the recommendation he could serve less than a year before he is freed on parole.

A culpable homicide ruling means that a person was killed unintentionally, but unlawfully.

An unnamed relative of Pistorius told Reuters, “Oscar will be released on parole by the end of August.” According to CNN, the South African department of correctional services confirmed the recommendation.

State prosecutors wanted a murder conviction, but the athlete’s admission that he fired by mistake, thinking that an intruder was hiding behind the door.

Following the sentencing, the state decided to appeal the ruling, and they won their bid to appeal the culpable homicide conviction.

They will look to establish a murder conviction when their case is heard in November, and if the appeal is successful in favour of the state, the former Olympian could face a prison sentence of at least 15 years.
