Juve’s Defensive Discipline Earns UCL Final Against Barca

Italian champions Juventus have progressed to the final of the UEFA Champions League after securing a 1-1 draw away to Real Madrid in Wednesday night’s second leg semi-final.

The Serie A team won 2-1 in the first leg last week, meaning that the stalemate at the Santiago Bernabeu was enough to see them through to the title match with a 3-2 aggregate victory over their Spanish rivals and the current European champions.

In a partial repeat of what happened in the first leg, goalscorers Alvaro Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo were on target for their respective sides.

It was not all plain sailing for Juve, and in fact it was Madrid that took the lead in the 23rd minute when Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the spot after a foul on James Rodriguez by Giorgio Chiellini.

The Italians did well not to let the early goal dent their confidence, and they continued to look dangerous on the counter attack, although the majority of their efforts were concentrated on keeping Madrid’s stellar attack at bay, which they did well, thanks to some fine goalkeeping from veteran Gianluigi Buffon.

In the second half the Bianconeri found their all-important equaliser through ex-Madrid player Morata in the 57th minute. A good move from the visitors saw Paul Pogba’s header across the box finding Morata, who reacted well to control and blast in a shot that Iker Casillas could only get a slight hand to before it bulged the roof of the net.

Juve then did what most Italian sides would do best, and their defensive discipline did not disappoint the travelling supporters from Turin, as they were able to keep the score deadlocked at 1-1, ensuring their passage to the final in Berlin on June 6, where they will face the mighty Barcelona.
