The last remaining South Africans involved in European club football this season have bowed out as both Everton and Ajax Amsterdam exited the Uefa Europa League at the third round stage.

The second tier tournament in European club football is reaching the business end, with two-leg knockout matches taking place between sides from all over the continent, and some of these teams include players from Africa.

Thulani Serero came on late in regular time for Ajax in their 2-1 victory over Ukraine side Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk that left the tie level at 2-2 on aggregate.

But the eastern Europeans advanced on the away goals rule as Ajax failed to force home the third goal they needed late on.
