Nigeria’s Super Eagles To Play Uganda In Friendly International

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will play a friendly international against the Uganda Cranes on Wednesday, March 25 in Uyo.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) took to Twitter on Thursday to announce the replacement friendly match against African opponents, following the withdrawal of Bolivia due to security concerns.

Bolivia was supposed to make the trip from South America to take on the Super Eagles, but their fears concerning what they deemed a “tense political situation” and “security issues” forced them to cancel the encounter, as they told local media in the country this week.

In a scramble to find a replacement and not waste a useful opportunity to prepare for upcoming qualification campaigns for both the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and 2018 World Cup, the NFF organised to host the Cranes in the first of two matches that they will be playing during the FIFA international window.

The second will come three days later against South Africa in Mbombela, with the Super Eagles reigniting a recent rivalry against Bafana, who kept the 2012 AFCON champions from defending their crown at this year’s Nations Cup after securing two draws against Nigeria in qualifying.

Announcing the Uganda encounter on Twitter via their official handle, the NFF said: “Confirmed. @NGSupereagles will lock horns against the Cranes of @OfficialFUFA Uganda at the Nest of Champions, Uyo on 26th March.” The same Twitter handle later corrected the date, stating that the game will be played on March 25, not 26.

Stand-in coach Daniel Amokachi has called up a squad of 28 players for the pair of matches.
