14 Great Places In South Africa For Adrenaline Junkies

1 of 16

Man-made structures in seemingly impossible settings along with some of the world’s most spectacular scenery make South Africa a great choice for beginning and experienced adrenaline junkies. South Africa has the second-highest commercial bungee jump in the world. There are three abseil routes on the western head at Knysna alone, including a high, exposed site over crashing waves. From abseiling, rapp jumping and slack lining to skydiving, bungee jumping and bridge swinging, here are 14 great places in South Africa for adrenaline junkies.

Carletonville Airport

Join the Johannesburg Skydiving Club for tandem dives that highlight landscapes including the Abe Bailey Nature Reserve. The location makes it a great stop between days that bungee jumps are planned. New jumpers can expect a short training session, but it’s worth the wait to experience the almost minute long freefall.

Gouritz Bridge

Take a leap off this South African bridge with strings attached and experience one of the oldest operating bungee jumps in the country. About 22 miles from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape, the Gouritz River Bridge is just 220 feet high, but it provides a range of adrenaline-rush opportunities. It’s also South Africa’s only commercial bridge swinging operation. What’s the difference between bungee jumping and bridge swinging? With bungee, you jump off with giant elastic bands usually tied to your feet. With bridge swinging, you jump from one bridge while tied to ropes suspended from an adjacent bridge. Full falls come close enough to the river below that you’ll swear that you touched its surface.

Table Mountain

It is only recently that abseiling, also called rappelling, has become a sport in its own right, according to Places.co.za. It used to be how climbers got off cliffs, cavers descended into the unknown and military task forces did all manner of maneuvers. Now it’s a sport as well. Abseiling or rappelling basically involves the easiest part (and for most people the funnest part) of rock climbing — the descent.

Rapp jumping is popular at South Africa’s most famous mountain. From Table Mountain, unbelievable views include Cape Town, Table Bay and surrounding mountains as you fall more than 100 feet in a single drop. Take a quick run before the jump to maximize the thrills in this experience.

Try a bridge swing over Lehr’s Waterfall for the ultimate thrill. The swing is classified as one of the highest ever and reaches speeds of more than 100 miles per hours in seconds. More specifically, you’ll leap off the edge of the waterfall and swing 165 meters (55 stories), accelerating to 120 kilometers and hour in 2.5 seconds, according to Wild5Adventures. Bragging rights are guaranteed! Too much adrenaline for you? Then try abseiling down a 110-meter cliff face and see the gorge from a different angle. Still too much adrenaline? You can always zip-line 165 meters above the treetops across the gorge, strapped into a full body harness while checking out Baboon’s Castle. And if that’s still too much, cruise the grade 2-to-4 rapids of the Umzimkhulu River.

The area is home to many natural wonders like Sabie Falls and Natural Bridge, but the gorge offers the best bungee jump location. Gorge swings also provide an exciting option to take advantage of the whole attraction.
