Copper Thieves Arrested And Detained In Namibia

From The Citizen

Eight women have been arrested after they were found in possession of copper cables in Etwatwa Mandela Section, Benoni in Gauteng. The women, aged between 26 and 70, were travelling in a taxi yesterday in Etwatwa Mandela Section when they were stopped by police officers, who proceeded to check the vehicle, Benoni City Times reported.

“When the members started searching the vehicle, they came across plastic bags, which the women were trying to shove underneath their seats,” said Benoni police spokesperson Lieutenant Nomsa Sekele.

When the bags were opened, police found copper cables with an estimated street value of between R40 000 and R50 000, added Sekele.

The women were arrested and detained at Etwatwa Police Station, and a case of possession of suspected stolen property was opened.

All eight women will appear in the Daveyton Magistrates’ Court soon. Last week, two suspected cable thieves were arrested in Germiston, Ekurhuleni.
