Algeria Remain Top African Team In FIFA Rankings

The latest FIFA ranking data is in for the month of March, and Algeria remain Africa’s best ranked side, placing at 18th in the overall list.

Cote D’Ivoire, the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions, have not moved at all since the February list, remaining second on the continent, two places behind the Fennecs in 20th spot.

Ghana is the third highest African team on the world football governing body list, moving one spot up to be ranked 24th in the world following their runner up finish in the 2015 AFCON which concluded last month in Equatorial Guinea.

The Carthage Eagles of Tunisia are one spot above the Black Stars in 25th position, while Africa’s fifth best side according to FIFA is Cape Verde, who find themselves in 35th spot.

Despite not being involved in the 2015 Nations Cup, the Super Eagles of Nigeria moved up one spot to 41. They are seventh on the continent. South Africa also moved up a single spot to place at 55th in the world and 15th in Africa.

Bafana will take on the Super Eagles on March 29 in a friendly international that will give both sides a chance to improve their respective positions ahead of the next FIFA ranking announcement in April.

In terms of the overall ranking, the top team remains 2014 World Cup winner Germany, while the runner up at that tournament is also second on the rankings, as Argentina stays ahead of Colombia in third position.

Belgium, Netherlands and 2014 hosts Brazil place fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, while Portugal finds itself in seventh spot, one place ahead of France. The top ten is completed by Uruguay at nine and the Azzurri of Italy in tenth spot.
