Ghana Tries To Balance Industrial Sector Growth With Clean Environment

With a growth of about 10 percent per year, Ghana’s industrial sector is the envy of many other African nations, but good its growth in manufacturing comes at a cost. Environmental degradation.

“The challenges will be basically related to pollution issues,” Letitia Nyaaba of Ghana Environmental Protection Agency told CCTV Africa on the sidelines of a clean energy meeting in the capital Accra.

“We are looking at water pollution from industrial activity, air pollution and with the growth of industrialization there is also a growth in urban population and a higher demand on limited natural resources.”

The government is however coming up with renewable energy solution to the problem. One those solution is using solar power.

A pilot scheme by the country’s energy regulatory commission called ‘Net Meter Rate’ seeks to encourage more both domestic and commercial electricity users to adopt the use of solar energy by offsetting power used from the national grin with any solar energy used by a company.

“The idea is that to help people save on the cost of electricity,” Frank Appiah from the Energy Regulatory Commission told CCTV Africa.
