Obafemi Martins Makes MLS Best XI For The Week

Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins has been honoured by Major League Soccer by being included in their Best XI for the first week of fixtures.

The American league saw Martins’ Seattle Sounders defeat the New England Revolution 3-0 on the opening weekend of MLS action for the year. The second goal in the encounter was scored by Martins, who rose above his markers to head a Tyrone Mears cross into the goal on the 41st minute.

Martins was also involved in the third goal of the match, helping Clint Dempsey to finish off the rout in the 67th minute.

His important contribution to the league match helped him to be named within the Best XI as a stand-out performer, kicking off his MLS campaign this year in the best possible fashion.

The former Inter Milan and Newcastle United striker has been a key player for the Sounders since joining the team in 2013, scoring at an average of around a goal every two games.
