Rwanda’s Newly Launched $4.4M Coffee Factory To Aid Farmers

Friday March 6, The Rwanda Farmers Coffee Company launched the opening of a $4.4M ($3 billion Rwf) coffee factory, according to The New Times. The facility — where roasting and packaging will take place — is located in the Gikondo district of Kigali.

Coffee farmers are said to eventually benefit from the factory which will contribute to raising their incomes, offering more production capacity and access to European, Asian and local markets the report said.

Commonly earning .07 cents per kilogram of coffee — with the help of the factory, farmers can expect to earn .25-.29 cents per kilogram. During the launch, according to The New Times, foreign buyers upped their pay, offering 14 pounds instead of 5 pounds per kilogram.

“This factory’s high production capacity will help increase the country’s competitiveness on the international market,” Geraldine Mukeshimana Rwanda’s minister of agriculture said.

While the country hosts roughly 5 coffee factories, this high capacity facility is expected to boost its now three tonnes per day production to six tonnes over time.  William Kayonga, CEO of Rwanda’s National Agricultural Export Development Board said sponsorship opportunities will be available for farmers as well.

“There are several measures to fetch better prices for farmers. Within their cooperatives, they will be able to set up more processing plants which must gradually increase price per unprocessed kilogramme. We will also continue to engage coffee exporters to give grants to farmers out of their profits as many agreed,” he said.
