Manchester United defender Jonny Evans and Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse should face bans after appearing to spit at each other, say Dietmar Hamann and Phil Neville.

Referee Anthony Taylor spoke to Evans and Cisse after the first-half incident on Wednesday, but neither were booked.

Ex-Newcastle player Hamann said: “This is not acceptable. It’s disgusting.” Former Manchester United defender Neville added: “It’s unacceptable. Both those players will be embarrassed.”

Television replays appeared to show Evans spitting towards Cisse, who was on the ground, during the game at St James’ Park, which Manchester United won 1-0 thanks to a late Ashley Young goal.

The Senegal forward then appeared to spit in the direction of Evans. Neither Newcastle manager John Carver nor Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal said they saw the incident.
