Ethiopia to Build 11 New Universities In Two Years

Ethiopia is going to build 11 new universities in the next growth and transformation plan period, aka GTP II, which is set to start in the coming fiscal year. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Education.

Among other states the universities are going to be constructed in Oromia, Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples and Amhara States, State Minister Dr. Kaba Urgessa explained.

When the construction of the universities is completed, they are expected to increase the nation’s enrollment capacity to 600,000 and raise the number of higher learning institutions to 42.

According to Kaba currently the design of the buildings, selecting specific areas of construction and conducting survey is being undertaken.

The universities are expected to be completed in two years time and priority will be given to science fields.

The State Minister explained the university lecturers will be trained starting from the next academic year. This will be done in the aim of equipping the lecturers with skills. He furthered construction as well as equipping the universities will be done in line with the lessons learnt from previous practices.
