India To Be South Africa’s Largest Tourism Source Market?

India To Be South Africa’s Largest Tourism Source Market?

By 2020, South Africa is hoping to pull in the majority of its international visitors from a new destination — India. The African country is striving to make India its top tourism source market by luring an addition 500,000 travelers, Business Standard reported.

Although there wasn’t an Ebola outbreak in South Africa, the virus which swept West Africa, was enough to deter international travelers from trekking to the country. In addition, according to Business Standard, the issuance of visas also created a snag in South Africa tourism numbers.

“We have substantially increased our marketing spend in India over the years to promote tourism,” Hanneli Slabber, head of South African Tourism told Press Trust of India. “We are targeting India, which is globally the seventh source market for our country, to become the biggest by 2020, by when we are expecting five lakh (500,000) travelers.”

While Nigeria is South Africa’s largest market tourism within the continent, the UK provides the largest amount of tourist arrivals with 442, 523 visitors in 2013, according to South Africa Info.

“We feel that [the] Indian market reacts fast and recovers fast as well. Therefore, we are expecting a double-digit growth this year (about 12 percent),” Slabber added in regards to the slip in tourism from India.

Aside from increased spending on tourism campaigns across India, South Africa is planning to launch a ‘Learn South Africa’ training program, as well as a tourism engagement program to be placed in more cities including New Delhi, Ahmadabad and Bengaluru, Business Standard noted.

According to South Africa Info, Brazil is also a target for a larger tourism source market. The country’s appeal, the report said, is that it caters to the young and old with welcoming offerings that include wildlife and adventurous attractions.
