Could Distrust Of Mobile Tech Hurt Upcoming Zambia Election?

Zambia is set to vote Jan. 20 for its next president, but a proposal to transmit election results via mobile phones has been rejected by the opposition party.

The country’s electoral commission bought mobile phones for all election officers to use to transmit election results as part of an effort to bring efficiency in the election management system, ITWebAfrica reports. They planned to use mobile phones to transmit election results electronically.

The country’s largest opposition party, the United Party for National Development, initially accepted mobile phones for the transmission of results. Then it said it received information that intelligence officers would hack into the system and manipulate the results in favor of the ruling party and against the opposition.

Now the deal is off.

The United Party for National Development said it will not accept the proposal to transmit results using mobile phones.

“We want to make it clearly known that we will not accept the electronic transmission of results because we have information that results will be intercepted and manipulated before being sent to national results centre,” said Canicius Banda, vice president of  politics for the opposition.

The Electoral Commission said it will invite the opposition to share its information before deciding what to do next.
