The Debate Over Mobile Phone Surge In Africa

In the telecommunications business in Africa, the gap between the old and the new players is stark.

A recent survey showed that 96 percent of subscribers have opted for mobile phones and just 3 percent for fixed lines.

Most of the fixed-line operators are state-owned and the challenge for them is how to stay relevant in an increasingly wireless world.

Some of these operators are creating their own mobile platforms and others are merging with mobile companies.
