The government has announced a lift on the ban of mobile phones in secondary school premises to make room for an initiative designed to build positive attitude towards mathematics in secondary school students. Until now, students in Tanzania have not been allowed to enter their schools’ with mobile phones.

However, the government announced mid this week that it will permit a single day, to start with, when students will be allowed to use their mobile gadgets in the classroom.

Making the announcement in Dar es Salaam, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communication Science and Technology John Mgondo, expressed confidence in the pilot project dubbed “Nokia Mobile Mathematics.

“The project will help improve the students’ attitude towards the subject because they will be using exciting electronic devices,” he said noting that the project is already underway in at least ten Dar es Salaam secondary schools.

These include, Tambaza, Azania, Jangwani, Keko, Changombe, Zanaki, Kibasila, Isauke, Manzese and Kambanga. The project is being conducted in partnership with Microsoft Tanzania, Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), Tigo Tanzania and the University of Dar es Salaam Education Collage (DUCE).
