How Mauritius Became Africa’s Most Competitive Market

The small island of Mauritius has overtaken South Africa as the most competitive market in Africa according to the latest World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report

Ranked 45th in the world, Mauritius has capitalised on its geographical location as a link between Africa and Southeast Asia and focused on improving its policies and institutions to attract investors and big business.

This, says Dr Lyal White, director for the Centre of Dynamic Markets at Gibs, is why Mauritius is the most competitive market on the continent.

“Mauritius is committed to making sure that it builds its internal competitiveness so they’ve focused on structural issues in the country to make sure that they attract the right investment and an investment that will return and be seen as the place to do business and live,” he says.

Being a small country with no real natural resources to leverage off, the Mauritian government has for years been focused on building and enhancing its institutions to ensure they can service the bigger economies from Asia.
