Imbonerakure Rally for Votes, Accused of Using Violence in Burundi

“One or two Imbonerakure may commit a crime, we are not denying this. But it’s important not to generalize but instead to denounce them and punish them in compliance with the law,” Denis Karera, League of Young Imbonerakure president told CCTV Africa.

Youth members of the CNDD-FDD ruling party (Imbonerakure) recently took to the streets to garner votes for the upcoming 2015 election. According to a CCTV Africa report, though peaceful in their movement, members of the party have been accused of violent attacks on civilians and opposition party members.

“I’m taking part in this march so others will want to become members of our party,” Djuma Irankunda, an Imbonerkure member said.
