Changing Habits Of Mobile Shoppers In South Africa

Consumer confidence is growing in e-commerce, with mobile shopping registering increased popularity according to a recent survey, iAfrica.com reports.

South Africans say entertainment is the main reason they use their tablets, but once they’re finished playing Candy Crush Saga, 68 percent turn to online shopping, according to respondents in the annual Mobile and Tablet Survey by online retailer kalahari.com.

Thirteen percent of respondents in the 2014 survey said they felt it was safer to shop on mobile than on a personal computer, compared to 6 percent in 2013, iAfrica.com reports.

And in 2014, 43 percent of survey respondents said shopping on their mobile devices was safer than shopping in the mall compared to 32 percent in 2013.

Now in its fifth year, the survey claims to be an indicator of emerging trends in South Africa’s e-commerce retail space.

“Changes in e-commerce are taking place at a rapid pace,” said kalahari.com CEO Caren Genthner-Kappesz. “If the findings from the survey are anything to go by, we are entering into a really exciting phase in mobile and tablet retail spend. We have a much greater consumer confidence and are excited by the opportunities that this presents us with.”

Other survey results include the following:

– In 2013, most respondents (40.7 percent) said they owned Blackberries. In 2014, most (47.7 percent) said they owned Samsung Galaxy.

– 60 percent of kalahari.com customers said they like using their phones or tablets in front of the TV.

– 63 percent said they multi-task on their phones while eating and relaxing with family or friends.

– 38 percent said they use their mobile devices while in bed.

– 80 percent of tablet or smartphone owners said their devices have replaced their alarm clocks, 66 percent said they have replaced their cameras; 28 percent said their devices have replaced their radios.
