More Camps to Open as South Sudanese Refugees Flock to Ethiopia

“On my way here I was separated from my family. I don’t know where they are. They could be on their way here,” Nyakhot Wel Deng, a South Sudanese refugee told CCTV Africa.

“We used to eat leaves from trees on our way to this place. Sometimes as we passed through villages we would get fish.”

Deng is like many refugees who traveled for days or even a month to reach a camp in their neighboring country. Conflict in South Sudan’s capital Juba has pushed more than 100,000 of the country’s citizens to Ethiopia. According to CCTV Africa, Ethiopia’s Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs (ARRA) is preparing to open more camps as overcrowding and food rations are becoming issues. It is estimated that by year’s end, the number of refugees will reach 700,000.
