Niger´s Ex-President Tandja Sees Immunity Revoked

From Star Africa

A court in Niger has stripped ex President Mamadou Tandja of his immunity from prosecution. The decision to revoke his immunity would pave the way for him to appear before a judge over a CFA 400 billion case in which he is a suspect, sources disclosed Saturday.

The move follows a request filed by the current authorities in Niger.

During a deliberation in his house Mamadou Tandja had declared that he left the state with CFA 400 billion when he was toppled on 18 February 2010.

The discourse was recorded and made available to Nigeriens, a situation which prompted the authorities to bow to public opinion and ordered an investigation into the ex-leader’s claim.

In a press briefing in February, the former leader had claimed part of the amount estimated at CFAF300 billion was with the Islamic Development Bank and must be used to expedite the hydro-electric dam project in Kandadji.
