Works and transport minister Yamfwa Mukanga says the government is committed to enhancing rail connectivity in the transport sector.

Speaking when he commissioned the first Zambia Railways passenger service train between Kapiri Mposhi and Nakonde in Kapiri Mposhi on Sunday, Mukanga said the initiative was in conformity with the SADC Protocol on enhancing rail connectivity.

“I wish to reiterate that government’s desire is to see to it that the rail sector grows. Therefore, we are happy to see and witness such initiatives and efforts by the Zambia Railways to develop new routes, especially that it involves a partnership between ZRL Zambia Railways Limited and TAZARA,” Mukanga said. “…Countries in the SADC region are being encouraged to invest in the rail infrastructure and interconnect to other rail networks to allow a seamless flow of cargo and transportation of passengers.

Hence, what we are witnessing today is a manifestation of our government’s efforts to abide by the SADC Protocol. This initiative will significantly enhance the movement of people from Kitwe to Nakonde and vice versa, and to and from Tanzania.”

Mukanga urged management at the two companies to continue improving rail infrastructure.

“I wish to commend ZRL and TAZARA management for having speedily worked together to start this service. This is how it should be,” Mukanga said. “I implore you to continue working together even in improving the service. Be innovative and creative because today’s traveller is very demanding due to their exposure to the outside world…do not be left out. I also pledge that government will continue supporting you with
such initiatives.”

Mukanga observed that the passenger train had the potential to enhance people’s livelihoods.
