Blue Diamond The Size Of Strawberry Could Break Price Record

Blue Diamond The Size Of Strawberry Could Break Price Record

A 122-carat blue diamond found at the Cullinan mine near Pretoria, South Africa is so pure it’s expected to eclipse the most expensive diamond ever sold, BBC.com reports.

The jewel is about the size of a strawberry, according to a video by Peter-John Parisis. Shares of diamond mining company Petra rose almost 7 percent to a year’s high in early trading on news of the exceptional find, making it the top percentage gainer of the FTSE 250 mid-cap index.

“So far, the highest price on record paid for a rough diamond was $35.3 million, paid in February 2010 for a 507-carat white stone, also recovered from Cullinan. We think that this stone may break that record,” finnCap analyst Martin Potts said, BBC reports.

The largest rough gem diamond ever recovered was found in the Cullinan mine: the famous 1905 Cullinan Diamond, which was cut into two stones that are part of the British crown jewels.

At a whopping 3,106 carats, the Cullinan Diamond was the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found. That’s 25-times larger than the Cullinan’s latest 122-carat booty.
